What Slime Mold Actually Is
Despite its name, slime mold is not really a mold at all. It is not a fungus, not a plant, and not an animal. It is something genuinely unique: a single-celled organism that behaves a bit like an amoeba, able to move slowly, feed, and even work its way through simple mazes in laboratory experiments.
It tends to appear where three conditions line up:
- Moist, humid surroundings
- Warm temperatures, typical of indoor spaces
- A little organic material to feed on, such as dust, skin cells, soap residue, or bits of plant matter
Bathrooms, basements, and kitchens are common hotspots simply because they so often provide that combination of moisture, warmth, and microscopic food.
